Austria. Vienna (?)
Jacob & Josef Kohn (?)
wood, fabric; carpentry, turning, bending, tinting
KP-445897-445903
The living room furniture set acquired by the museum (six upholstered pieces and a round table) is very similar to model No. 423 from a 1912 catalog of the Viennese firm of Jacob and Joseph Cohn.<br>
The firm was founded in the mid-19th century in Vienna by the brothers Jacob and Joseph Cohn. The firm first exhibited its designs at the 1873 Vienna World's Fair. Models of similar pieces were designed by the renowned Viennese designer Josef Hoffmann. Hoffmann's style is characterized by straight lines and smooth surfaces, tinted by vigorously rubbing paint into the wood to reveal its grain.
